A braai produces far more heat and dense smoke than a conventional kitchen appliance. Yet many enclosed patios and indoor braai areas are fitted with standard kitchen extractors or decorative hoods that were never designed for live-fire smoke extraction.
The result?
Lingering smoke, stained ceilings, irritated eyes, and a space that becomes uncomfortable to use.
A true braai extraction system is engineered differently.
It requires:
A powerful motor positioned at the end of the chimney to actively pull smoke upward
A chimney system designed to create consistent draft
Correct hood angles that funnel smoke efficiently into the flue
Components built to handle sustained heat and combustion byproducts
This is not air filtration.
It’s controlled smoke extraction.
Before choosing components, it’s important to understand one simple principle:
Smoke must be actively guided from the braai surface, into the hood, through the ducting, and expelled outside — without resistance, leakage, or backflow.
Every component in the system plays a role in that journey.
Recommended for CHAD-O-CHEF Gas or Hybrid Braais. (No Wood Braais)
The hood is where the journey begins.
Our Extractor Hoods come complete with a grease filter, drip tray, and integrated light fitting — designed specifically for the smoke output of CHAD-O-CHEF braais.
Correct sizing ensures smoke is captured at source — not after it has already filled the room.
What to consider:
The hood must be wider than your braai.
(Example: A 750mm braai requires a 1000mm hood.)
If including additional appliances like a gas hob, the hood must cover those too.
A hood 1500mm or larger requires a more powerful extractor fan — even with a short ducting run — to maintain effective vacuum.
Available widths:
1000mm
1250mm
1500mm
1800mm
Hoods are available in:
Top Exit – ideal for vertical chimney runs
Rear Exit – suited for horizontal routing through walls
Your building layout determines which option is required.
For optimal performance, the hood must be installed:
600–700mm maximum above the braai surface.
Higher placement reduces smoke capture efficiency and increases spillage risk.

Once smoke enters the hood, it must travel through ducting to the extraction fan and out of the building. The ducting configuration depends on whether the run is internal or external.
With either orientation you will require a minimum of 1m ducting for Gas Braais or 2m ducting for the Chad-O-Chef Hybrid Braais.
Rigid Ducting + Straight/Elbow Couplings
Used primarily for external applications.
Provides structural stability and smooth airflow.
Flex Ducting + Square-to-Round Couplings
Used for internal runs such as bricked-in chimneys or ceiling bulkheads.
Allows adaptability within confined construction spaces.
Extractor fans are powerful and heavy.
To prevent stress on ducting, support must be provided using:
Excussion Plate (for vertical fan installations)
Triangular Wall Brackets (suitable for any orientation)
The ducting should guide airflow — not carry structural load.
To prevent water ingress and environmental damage, systems are fitted with:
Weather Dome
Butterfly Damper
Louvre (where required)
These ensure consistent airflow while protecting the system from wind and rain.

The fan is what transforms the system from passive to active.
Unlike kitchen extractors that filter air, CHAD-O-CHEF extractor motors are positioned at the end of the chimney to pull smoke upward, creating consistent negative pressure through the entire system.
Our Extractor Fans are engineered for high-volume smoke removal.
Larger hoods and longer ducting journeys require greater extraction power to maintain consistent vacuum.
EX-FAN250
Suitable for:
• 1000mm hood
• Up to 2m ducting
EX-FAN315
Suitable for:
• 1250mm hood
• Up to 5m ducting
EX-FANKD315
Required for:
• 1500mm or 1800mm hood
• Longer ducting runs

Our extractor systems are manufactured in stainless steel and available in:
Inland Grade – for general corrosion-resistant applications
This ensures long-term durability in both interior and exterior installations.
The Extractor System must be installed complete with all correct components, and the Extractor Fan must be installed by a Qualified Electrician.
Correct installation is critical to safety and performance.
Every installation is unique — building layout, braai size, ducting length, and environmental conditions all influence the final specification.
